Dr. Sivanandi Rajadurai (alias) Mylaudy Dr. S. Rajadurai is a scientist in the field of catalysis, free radical, physical chemistry and emission control, observant on fortification of the global environment and a corporate executive. Dr. S. Rajadurai has devoted nearly 37 years to scientific innovation, pioneering theory and application towards climate stabilization from the 20th century and is expanding strides of advancement into the 21st century. He holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. His doctoral thesis on mixed oxide catalyst guided his future research on the development of solid oxide solutions for pollution abatement. Through an extensive tenure of senior leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies, academic professorships, and counselor to governments, Dr.Rajadurai’s innovations in catalysis have created significant global value while also fundamentally revolutionizing strategies to protect the environment. He has established joint affiliations with elite research institutions around the world that continue to provide solutions addressing industry challenges in energy and environment. Dr. Rajadurai held teaching positions at The American College and Loyola College. By authoring hundreds of published papers and scientific reports, and innovating many scientific patents, Dr. Rajadurai’s research on solid oxide solutions, free radicals, catalyst structure sensitivity and catalytic converter designs have fundamentally revolutionized the field of physical chemistry. His technical expertise includes chemistry, chemical and mechanical engineering, computational chemical, fluid dynamic and structural simulations, energy and electron-transfer reaction kinetics, emission control and exhaust system development. As a corporate executive in the United States and India for over three decades, he managed strategies concerning on exhaust system development for Low Emission Vehicle (LEV), Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) and Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) systems and Carbon dioxide control research towards carbon neutral earth. Dr.Rajadurai’s global vision is to provide advancement in education, environmental awareness, and the welfare of society. He continues to dedicate his whereabouts towards mentorship of future leaders, scientists, and engineers. He is the chairman of the Rajadurai Foundation, the mission of which is to build academic scholarship, professional development, societal welfare and environmental protection – gifting real hope by way of all-inclusive partnerships and spiritual ethics for the advancement of human potential. Dr.Rajadurai has held leadership positions as the Board of Directors for the U.S. Fuel Cell Council, Manufacturers of Emission Control Association (MECA), Chairman of MECA Committee on Advanced Technologies and Alternate Fuels and Walker Exhaust India Pvt. Ltd. Dr.Rajadurai is an elected fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and a Life Member of the North American Catalysis Society, North American Photo Chemical Society, Catalysis Society of India, Instrumental Society of India, Bangladesh Chemical Society and Indian Chemical Society. From 1983-1985, he represented India before the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and accepted invitations to join the Royal Australian Chemical Society and the Royal Chemical Society of London. Additionally, Dr. Rajadurai has been invited by governments and a range of private sector senior executives to discuss catalysis-at-large, most notably as a Scientist and Technologist of Indian Origin and as a member of the Core Group of Automotive Research. Dr. Rajadurai has received numerous awards and honors of distinction throughout his career. As a visiting professor, he holds a number of seminars and facilitates corporate partnerships with the University of Notre Dame and Akron University (both in the United States) as well as SRM University, Adhiparasakthi College of Engineering, Karpagam University, SKR Engineering College, James Engineering College, Annai Vailankanni College of Engineering, Hindustan University, AMET, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering & Technology, B.S Abdur Rahman University and Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum. Dr. Rajadurai was also the Cummins Corporate Facilitator of Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” He authored “The Divine Nine” as principle words of wisdom for personal and professional development. Rajadurai received Dr.KCG Verghese 2017 Excellence Award for Research & Achievements from Hindustan Group of Institutions.

Early Life

Dr. S. Rajadurai was born on September 01, 1951 to Sivanandi Nadar and Thayammal Nadachi. He was the youngest of their six sons, who together with their parents, lived as an agricultural family within an extended village family in Mylaudy, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India. Although he was the youngest member of the family, he held primary responsibility to support both household and agricultural work. His education began at the age of six, in Mylaudy North Junior Basic Government School (JBS), where he studied until completing the fifth grade in 1962. He then transitioned into Ringle Taube High School in Mylaudy for sixth grade and completed his school final 11th grade in 1968. Later that year, he joined Vivekananda College, Kanyakumari District, as a Pre-Degree student. With the full support and mentorship provided by teachers and their trainings, he graduated with a first class degree. Although most of the students leave this remote college to better colleges, he elected to stay and continue his under graduate B.Sc. degree with its Department of Chemistry. He graduated in 1972 with distinction including amassing over fifty awards for his superior oratorical ability. Among them are one from Thiru Kuntrakudi Adikalar at the Coaching camp in Coutralam Parasakthi College in 1972 and one from Thiru. Kirupanantha Variar in 1972 and one at the Inter Collegiate Elocution Competition at Scott Christian College, Nagercoil 1972. He continued to demonstrate his excellent aptitude and potential when he earned the Rolling Trophy, presented to the winner of the Gandhi Jayanthi Elocution Competition held in Kanyakumari for three consecutive years (1969-1971). He was the Tamil Nadu Deiveega Pervai representative of Kanyakumari District in 1970-72. He continued showing glimpses of great purpose and promise that was becoming realized as he elected to manage the Annai Kalaivani Education Centre, Mylaudy at a time when most others chose to stay comfortably in the shadows of their parents. He was blessed with post-graduate admission in Mar Ivanios College Trivandrum (affiliated with Kerala University) and completed his Masters Degree in 1975 as a topper with Kerala University gold medal. Dr.Rajadurai also received the Teaching Competition award in 1974 at the Kerala University. He then completed a teaching assignment at Pioneer Kumaraswamy College, Nagercoil for a short time till October 1975 as chemistry demonstrator. His passion towards scientific subject matter and his yearning for learning enabled him to earn his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras (1979), where he worked closely with Professor J.C.Kuriacose. His thesis on mixed oxide catalyst directed him for his continued innovative research on solid oxide solution for pollution abatement and fuel cell applications. Even more impressive, while dedicating his time to his Ph.D., he represented IIT intercollegiate Weightlifting Team and received two Gold and one Silver medals and also served as the captain of the 1977 Chennai IIT Team. Dr. Rajadurai continues to share his appreciation and gratitude to IIT by coaching fresh IIT B.Tech weaker section students to advance their education level in the first year to match with the rest of the groups.


Dr.Rajadurai held teaching position from 1979 to 1980 at The American College in Madurai. He was also a superintendent of Washburn Hall where he took care of the development of more than 40 young graduate students. With his superlative teaching skills, he was recruited to be Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Loyola College, Chennai (1980-85). He taught various courses of chemistry including Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Advanced Analytical Chemistry, General Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Chemical Kinetics, Advanced Catalysis, Quantum Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Structural Inorganic Chemistry and Molecular Spectroscopy for graduate and post-graduate students. While at Loyola, he also reformed the catalysis research in 1980 and managed both the University Grants Commission and Department of Science and Technology Research Grants. He was also an approved Ph.D. program supervisor at the University of Madras. In that role, Dr. Rajadurai supervised 14 Post Graduate research projects and 1 Ph.D. program. He developed solid oxide solution catalyst by Pechini sol-gel, co-precipitation, powder mixing and impregnation methods. He was a member of the Autonomous Committee of Loyola College from 1983-1985, and was also the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) representative of India for the development of low cost analytical equipments. Dr. Rajadurai was a guest lecturer at the Royal Australian Chemical Society in 1983 at Melbourne, Australia to demonstrate low cost thermogravimetric analyzer. That same year, Dr.Rajadurai received the distinguished Research Professor Award from Loyola College.

In his five year-tenure, Dr.Rajadurai received Best Professor Award in 1983, for his perfect attendance. He also received the elocution competition award among the faculties of Loyola College in 1984. In the United States of America, Dr. Rajadurai began his career with research associate professor position at the University of Notre Dame working also in a number of advanced laboratories around the nation. His associates included Professor J.J.Carberry and Professor C.B. Alcock,with whom he collaborated and developed non-noble metal catalyst and solid oxide solutions, including one rivaling platinum for oxidation and reduction reactions. He was the invited guest of the Royal Chemical Society of London 1989. At the University of Notre Dame, he was in charge of catalysis laboratory at the chemical engineering department and supervised graduate research projects. At Bowling Green State University,

Dr. Rajadurai’s research focused on synthesizing, characterizing, and studying photochemical and photo-physical properties of organic free radicals. Dr.Rajadurai published high-profile scientific theories & applications in the area of chemistry, nano-second kinetics of free radicals, electron and energy transfer reaction kinetics, chemical reactor engineering, computational fluid dynamic analysis, finite element analysis, mechanical engineering, catalysis, emission control and exhaust system design, development, validation and manufacturing. Dr.Rajadurai completed certificate course in Finance and Marketing administration from Bowling Green State University, Ohio (1987),focusing primarily on closing the gap between innovative scientific research and industrial implementation.

Dr.Rajadurai transitioned to corporate business in 1990, with a series of senior scientist and executive positions. Dr.Rajadurai joined the Carus Chemical Company, Ottawa, IL, USA as a Senior Research Chemist by April 1990. At Carus Chemicals, he was responsible for generating a one-step process for Carulite catalyst formulation, and filed patents for ozone catalysts and powder-based catalyst coating techniques. He developed the powder catalyst coating technique on cordierite honeycomb, poly-urethane celcor foam and zirconia foam substrates. Subsequently, at MOTEC – a subsidiary of Cummins Power Generation, Dr.Rajadurai, as a Director of Research, led catalyst development, reactor designs, and the process of fabrication and analytics – resulting in solutions for NOx reduction systems applied in diesel and natural gas operated engines. His next position was as the Research Leader at the Cummins engine company, with several path breaking innovations etching his name in the history of the automotive industries. To name a few, he was an executive team member for the implementation of Cummins Technical System (CTS), a six year product development cycle, to Define, Design and Develop diesel engines along with exhaust after treatment system. In 1994, his team developed the first North American diesel oxidation catalytic converter to comply with the U.S. emission regulation, packaged and released in Cummins B5.9L diesel engine for Chrysler Dodge vehicle. Dr.Rajadurai was responsible to design and the NOx Test Cell at

the Technical Centre of Cummins at Columbus, IN and also implemented Selective Non-catalytic Reduction of NOx system for exhaust aftertreatment using cyanuric acid in 1 MW Diesel engine. He successfully managed Industry-University Research activities at Cummins-Notre Dame, Cummins-University of Washington, Cummins -Texas A&M, and Cummins-Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Rajadurai was also the Cummins Corporate Facilitator of Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. ”He was the Director of Advanced Development at Tenneco Automotive between 1996 and 2002. Dr.Rajadurai’s leadership tenure at Tenneco established computational modeling to develop exhaust system applied in the commercial, heavy duty specialty and global emerging markets. He led the global technology engineering team with Gillet, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He efficiently demonstrated technology feasibility to meet SULEV on a 4.6 L, V8 Vehicle. His unique responsibility includes the development of the first North American manufacturing of the ultra-thinwall substrate catalytic converter working with corning and NGK. He became a Member of the BMW emission technology brainstorming team, 1998.

He represented PZEV and low emission vehicle testing at the University of California, with MECA, ARB and EPA. Dr. Rajadurai demonstrated emissions system capabilities in Tenneco Tech days at Ford (1998), Daimler Chrysler (1999), Nissan (1998) and Navistar International (2000), and MEMA JAMA (2001). He was honored with the Tenneco Corporation General Manager’s Leadership Award, Innovation Award, Vision Award, and also recognized as “Mr. Converter” and “The Standing Innovation.” Dr. Rajadurai also led the global design and supply teams and managed strategy on exhaust system development for Low Emission Vehicle (LEV), Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) and Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) systems. He was instrumental to starting Tenneco Automotive India, where he represented as a Member of the Board of Directors. Being intimately engaged with senior leadership of several American companies, he accepted Arvin Meritor Inc.’s offer to serve as its Director of Emission Strategies. There, he paved the way for establishing Technology and Product Development Road Map for Emissions


Systems and related products. He also led business reviews and planning for emissions system division leading to new business opportunities and also directed emission control system development efforts on a global basis with primary responsibility at Columbus Technical Centre. He was successful in leading emission control system development efforts and advanced diesel particulate regeneration strategy and testing with GM power train and Ford Sci. Lab. He pioneered chemical modeling using Computational Fluid Dynamic and CHEMKIN codes for high performance flow oriented catalytic converter optimization. Additionally, he led the engine simulation modeling group to correlate engine performance, runner optimization and volumetric flow comparisons using WAVE, GT-Power, LAMP and MANDY models. He initiated the technical competitive analysis process for frugal engineering. Dr.Rajadurai was enlisted as a member of MECA PZEV technology feasibility demonstration and vehicle testing team to develop exhaust systems complying Partial Zero Emission (PZEV) applied in Honda Accord,

Toyota Camry, Ford Focus, and Nissan Sentra vehicles. He assisted implementing advanced CFD modeling in ArvinMeritor Technical Support Centre, Bangalore, India and trained engineers. In 2004, he was recognized by Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas as Scientist and Technologist of Indian Origin. Prior to returning to India from America, Dr. Rajadurai worked as Vice President at the eminent ACS Industries. From 2004 to 2009, he was in-charge of the strategic planning for product and technology development of catalyst infrastructure. There, he defined, designed, and developed exhaust after treatment components for Automotive and Truck Industry, which resulted in extraordinary new business opportunities. He started a high-profile Research & Development facility in Boynton Beach Florida for catalyst development, characterization, testing and validation for small engines and diesel powered applications. Dr.Rajadurai also successfully worked with OEMs such as Ford, DCX, GM, Nissan, Caterpillar, International, Cummins, DDC and John Deere, Scania, Yanmar and Tier Suppliers, Tenneco, ArvinMeritor, Delphi, ACH, Bosal, Benteler, Calsonic, Catco, Eberspacher, Faurecia, Cummins Emission Solutions and Donaldson. He developed computer modeling for catalytic converter optimization and designed wire mesh thermolyzer/mixer for low temperature urea SCR, wire mesh catalyst system After 25 years in America, Dr. Rajadurai returned to India with a motive to serve the global automotive industry in India and nurture the budding talents that sought strong guidance. Wanting to help and guide the nation’s young and brilliant minds, he decided to join a growing company Sharda Motors Industries Limited, where, since 2009 he is the President, Chief Executive Officer, and Head of Research & Development. In these roles, he has built a pre-eminent Tier 1 research & development centre in South India for Sharda Motor Industries Ltd,

that established itself as #1 in India for Tier 1 emission control and exhaust system suppliers and set precedence for scientific training of new engineers. He has also found great success in promoting rural talents by personally recruiting young graduates from villages. He provided these individuals with a full range of professional knowledge and exposure, and also experience in corporate culture to deliver technical solutions effectively. He managed strategic planning of exhaust product development, technology identification, technology screening and technology development for BSIII, BSIV, BSVI, Euro IV, Euro V, Euro VI, US Tier 2 & Tier 3 and off-road Tier 4 regulations. His zeal for engineer empowerment has created a youthful team who under his guidance managed, developed, and validated systems for pollution control working closely with Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Hyundai, John Deere, TAFE, Renault Nissan, Toyota, Cummins and other OEMs. He established exhaust product design, development, validation and manufacturing and manages extended enterprises to keep up with product innovations. He plans and executes numerous joint development and partnership programs.

Throughout his long and laborious journey, there has been an ultimately loyal woman who has supported and encouraged him: Mrs. Fatima Rajadurai, a well-known philanthropist and spiritual leader in addition to being from an illustrious family which promotes Indian culture. Dr.Rajadurai and Mrs.Fatima Rajadurai together published articles on Sustainable Earth and attended several Earth Day activities in the United States including some in Washington DC Mall. They are also blessed with two sons –Merin and Abiman, both successful in their own right – as well as two daughters through their son’s respective marriages (Loveen and Joanna), and one granddaughter (Daiya).

Innovative Research

Rajadurai Innovations offers deterministic computational models for catalyst selection using fundamental chemical properties of elements, and defines new chemical processes for the catalyst industry. Dr. Rajadurai has been developing solid oxide solutions, low noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal catalysts comparable to that of 0.5% loaded platinum catalysts for automobile emission control system.

He explored the use of gold/platinum and gold/palladium, alloys for oxidation, reduction reactions. He invented the use of solid solution with dysprosium for simultaneous reduction of NOx and CO (CONOx Process) and applied in a Mazda Gasoline Operated vehicle for emission control application. This noble metal conservation process provides cost effective and high performing catalysts for the chemical conversion of pollutants into innocuous gases. The high cost of the noble metals has been continuously encouraging the development of oxides, spinels, perovskits, and alloys of transition metals as potential catalyst for pollution abatement process. As a consequence, he introduced low noble metal catalyst in automobile emission control devices.

CO2 Control & Carbon Footprint Research

Dr. Rajadurai’s vision is to calibrate a natural, carbon-neutral earth to prevent catastrophic crises. His CO2 control research activity is focused on controlling enhanced greenhouse effect, global warming, and climate change generally. He discussed closely with (Fmr.) President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam on approaches to address the impact of CO2 on environmental, societal welfare and health effects. Dr.Rajadurai initiated a green technology centre to motivate professors and students towards a global approach to protect the environment from challenges such as acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, rainforest deterioration, river contamination, sea level rise, accumulation of hazardous wastes, air pollution and over population. His research work on carbon dioxide control is to capture and extract the gas by various artificial methods. Techniques using effective absorbers, conventional and nanocatalytic methods, capturing using enzymes, and micro-algae are few pathways to reduce CO2. CO2 can be converted into useful chemicals such us methane, methanol, and biomass. Many strategies for reducing CO2 emissions from energy are cross-cutting and apply to homes, businesses, industry, and transportation. He has been actively involved with SRM University’s formula racing team developing zero emission systems and high performance exhaust sytem for fuel efficient vehicles. Rajadurai Innovations is working on a unique set of fundamentals complementing the principles of CO2 control by bringing together: exhaust system engineering that complements improvement of fuel efficiency in vehicle minimizing production of CO2, natural fixation of CO2 by green development, and artificial capture and sequestration of CO2 using various technologies.

Green Development

As a part of CO2 control, Dr. Rajadurai is actively involved in Green Development. The Green Development philosophy of Rajadurai Innovation is to become a model for sustainable development of rural and urban areas. He is involved in formation of sequential agricultural lands from non-cultivatable wasteland subsequently to scale new opportunities for farmers. He demonstrated techniques of farming by preparation of soil, mobilizing the best process for transplantation, cycles of harvest field maintenance from start to finish, and improvement of scientific applications for use of green leaf as a bio-fertilizer avoiding carbon burn. Dr.Rajadurai has been actively involved in the last four decades in developing mango farms, teak farms, plantain farms and areca nut farms in rulral areas. He participates by planting trees every year on Earth Day April 22 for a green and clean earth. Rajadurai Innovation has been engaging in a waste management process to obtain highly economical and best quality bio-fertilizer for organic and natural farming. Additionally, recycling processes are used in industrial composting as an attempt of waste management. He sponsored many tree planting programs and introduced funding for programmed tree maintenance plan.
